  • Informal Markets: Explore the Otjomuise Market or the Katutura Market for a taste of local life, where you can find fresh produce, traditional clothing, and handmade goods.
  • Stock up for your Safari: Before embarking on your self-drive safari, make sure to stock up on essential items like food, water, and fuel at supermarkets like Spar, Fresh and Shoprite.
  • Savor Local Flavors: Enjoy traditional Namibian cuisine at restaurants like Joe’s Beer House or the Brauhaus, which offer a range of local dishes, including game meat and traditional stews.
  • Experience the City: Visit the Christus Kirche, a beautiful example of German colonial architecture, and explore the city’s vibrant atmosphere, which is a great introduction to the country’s warm hospitality.

Located in the heart of the Namib Desert, Sossusvlei is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Namibia’s most iconic attractions. Gates open at sunrise and close again at sunset. This changes through the year, so make sure to consider this the day before you head into the park by talking to your local host in the area. Here are a few highlights to add to your itinerary:

  • Dune Hiking: Wake up early to hike up the iconic Dune 45 or Big Daddy.
  • Panoramic Views: Take in the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape from the top of a dune, or from the comfort of a 4×4 vehicle.
  • Dead Vlei: Explore the surreal landscape of Dead Vlei, a dried-up pan surrounded by towering sand dunes, and imagine the ancient river that once flowed through this area.
  • Sesriem Canyon: Explore the nooks and crannies of this surprising desert canyon with its dramatic shadows and cool shaded stone walls.
  • Wildlife and Scenic Drives: Take a scenic drive through the Namib Desert and keep an eye out for unique wildlife, such as ostriches, springboks, and oryx.
  • Stargazing: Spend a night under the stars at a nearby campsite, and marvel at the incredible night sky, which is perfect for stargazing due to the lack of light pollution

Tips and Essentials

  • Always hike with a guide or in a group, as the sand can be extremely hot and the terrain can be treacherous.
  • Bring plenty of water, sun protection, and a hat to protect yourself from the harsh desert sun.
  • Be respectful of the environment and wildlife, avoid or damaging the desert plants and animals or other natural features, and do not litter.
  • Consider staying at a nearby campsite or lodge to experience the unique atmosphere of the desert at night such as Desert Hills Lodge, We Kebi Safari Lodge or Hammertein Lodge

  • Salt Pans and Waterholes: Explore the vast salt pans and waterholes of Etosha, where you can see a variety of wildlife, including elephants, lions, and giraffes. Take a guided game drive or self-drive tour to see this incredible collection of critters and creatures.
  • Scenic Drives and Viewing Areas: Take a scenic drive to one of the many viewing areas, such as Okondeka or Okaukuejo, to see the wildlife and enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding landscape. All the camps inside the parks have view points to sit and watch the wildlife come and go.

The gladdest moment in human life is a departure into unknown lands.

- Sir Richard Burton

Then I realized that to be more alive, I had to be less afraid. So I did it. I lost my fear and gained my whole life.

- Unknown

Every man’s life ends the same way. It is only the details of how he lived and how he died that distinguish one man from another.

- Ernest Hemingway

Oh, the places you’ll go.

- Dr. Seuss

The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure.

- Christopher McCandless

Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.

- Ibn Battuta

I travel because I’d rather look back at my life, saying ‘I can’t believe I did that’ instead of ‘if only I had’.

- Florine Bos

Jobs fill your pockets, but adventures fill your soul.

- Jaime Lyn

Travel far enough, you meet yourself.

- David Mitchell

Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.
